原文：Q.Shall we discuss the reasons for and against there being an English department next year？A.I think that there are enough people studying foreign languages at the moment. So I don't think it is a good idea to have another department dealing with English because after all other departments are suffering from lack of students. There are plenty of subjects which aren't very popular but you could say 'well we can't do without them so let's have them on the course'. You could put in something like psychology or philosophy where you wouldn't expect too many people to take your courses. But not English. English is widely studied as a second language throughout the world. I mean it's one of those subjects that isn't going to run into shortage any time soon. In fact， if anything you might find a shortage of teachers trained to teach this subject well.
